Rare Books & Special Collections Librarian
Cheryl graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1973 with a B.A. (Hons) in English Language and Literature with special interest in historical and textual bibliography. Following some five years as a cataloguer at Flinders University Library, she served as research assistant to the Early Imprints Project of South Australia (EIPSA) which sourced, appraised and described books printed before 1801 and held in South Australia, contributing over 8,000 titles to the ESTC (Eighteenth Century Short Title Catalogue) database. Her involvement with rare books continued through her employment as a cataloguer of Special Collections material at the Barr Smith Library and as a Research Assistant in the Department of English.
Cheryl was appointed Special Collections Librarian at the Barr Smith Library in 2004, and has continued her studies through attendance at Rare Book Summer Schools in Dunedin, Melbourne and Sydney. Her special interests include the history and spread of printing, the development of lithography and the recording of book history through provenance.
Senior Library Officer
Lee completed her Bachelor of Arts, with major studies in Sociology and Legal Studies, at Flinders University in 1996. For eight years she worked in the Research Library at the Defence Science at Technology Organisation where she gained valuable experience in all areas of its technical operation, and as a Librarian responsible for three science and engineering divisions. Whilst there, she completed a Graduate Diploma in Information Studies at the University of South Australia (2007), and developed a keen interest in the preservation of old and rare books. In 2009 Lee returned to University to complete a Master of Library and Information Management and specialised in web content management, preservation and archival management.
In 2013 Lee was appointed Library Services Officer of Rare Books & Special Collections. Here she provides research assistance, sorts and describes donated manuscript collections, maintains the unit’s website and promotes the Library’s collections through its Book-of-the-month feature. She also contributes to the blog, curates exhibitions, administers the Friends of the Library’s Adopt-a-Book program and conserves some of the Library’s fragile books and papers using traditional tools and techniques.
Marie completed her Diploma of Library and Information Services at the Adelaide City TAFE in 2008. She started work as part of Document Delivery and Collection Maintenance in The Barr Smith Library in 2009 before joining the Special Collections team in 2012.
Marie is responsible for maintaining the physical collections in Rare Books & Special Collections and is our specialist in digitisation techniques and processes. Her interest in new and emergent technologies has been applied to promote Special Collections via Facebook, Flickr and Instagram. Marie also maintains our provenance index and has recently curated an exhibition linking mapping, provenance and book history.
