Giving better feedback: an efficient process to help PhD students become confident writers
Supervising a PhD student involves more than guiding their research — it means helping them grow as confident, capable writers. Yet many students finish their PhDs doubting their writing abilities, often because feedback has been rushed, overly critical or simply a rewrite of their work.
In this one-hour workshop, you’ll learn strategies professional editors use to provide clear, time-efficient and constructive feedback, without taking over your student’s writing.
You’ll discover how to:
- use document plans to save time and clarify expectations
- identify structural issues and guide students to fix them themselves
- give feedback that supports rather than undermines confidence
- know when to focus on structure, clarity or style (and when not to).
Led by Dr Malini Devadas, an experienced editor and writing coach, this session will help you streamline your feedback process, build your students’ independence and make supervision less stressful and more rewarding for both of you.
