Civil, structural and environmental engineers offer a broad and sought after skill set with a focus on creating and enhancing our essential physical infrastructure, whilst maintaining a strong focus on our natural and built environments.

This five-year degree combines the disciplines of civil and structural engineering with civil and environmental engineering to produce graduates with broad expertise in infrastructure design and maintenance, sustainable development and environmental impact assessment. With a focus on engineering problem-solving, design and analysis using modern, computer-based methods, the program equips graduates with a multidisciplinary skills that can be applied to a range of engineering challenges.

    Year 12 Applicants You must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study (48 units). You compete for a place with your Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).
    Prerequisites SACE Stage 2: Mathematical Methods (if studied in 2017. If studied year 12 prior to 2017, the equivalent subject was called Mathematical Studies), Physics plus one of Specialist Mathematics or Chemistry.

    IB: either Mathematics (HL grade 3) and Physics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3); or, Chemistry (SL grade 4/HL grade 3), Physics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3) & Mathematics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3)

    Alternative entry pathways
    • Higher Education applicants
      You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent higher education study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA.
    • VET applicants
      You must have completed an AQF Certificate IV or above from a Registered Training Organisation. Your application will be ranked according to the level of the award.
    • Special Entry applicants
      You must be 18 years or over before 1 February 2018. If you have studied at higher education level in the last two years (for 2018 entry this means you were enrolled in either 2017 or 2016), you must not have accumulated more than a TOTAL of 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education study (ie. including any study prior to 2016). If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Your STAT result is not weighted between verbal and quantitative components.     Career Readiness

    With specialist skills across two broad engineering disciplines, graduates can seek employment across a wide range of industries and organisations, including multinational companies, government departments, small and large manufacturers, construction companies, private consulting engineering practices and the defence, energy and information technology industries in Australia and abroad.

    Some of the more common careers include the following.

    Structural engineers design the framework of buildings, towers, bridges, tunnels and other structures to ensure strength and safety. They study developments of new materials and methods and their use in the design and construction of new structures and repair of existing structures.

    Water resources engineers work with the natural hydrological cycle to supply water and to collect wastewater from cities and towns for treatment prior to its return to the environment. Water resources engineering also looks at flow in natural river channels.

    Coastal engineers design and implement solutions on the coast that provide for society's need and desire to live and work by the ocean. They design harbours, jetties, wharves and seawalls, and schemes to protect and maintain beaches, both for recreation and as a way of protecting population centres against some of nature's most energetic forces.

    Geotechnical engineers are involved in the design and construction of foundations, dams, earth retaining structures, embankments, tunnels, pavements and landfills. They also offer engineering assessments of the ground and landslides, and provide solutions for the remediation of contaminated ground.

    Transportation and highways engineers specialise in analysing population and growth statistics, and traffic patterns and volume, to project future requirements. They consult with specialists and government officials to design efficient and safe traffic systems, including public transport and study roadway and embankment design, the geometry of highway interchanges and the maintenance of facilities such as culverts and overpasses.

    Materials and testing engineers conduct research, develop tests and evaluate the quality or suitability of materials and products related to projects such as bridges, dams, roads, airports and railways. Other projects may be in relation to waste disposal, flood control, and industrial/large buildings. Additionally, they coordinate and direct the research, development and testing of materials such as asphalt, concrete, steel, cement, timber and plastics, and consider factors such as stresses and strains, estimated load, water pressure, wind resistance and temperature fluctuations. They advise on materials most suited to meet individual construction problems.

    Global Learning Experience

  • Degree Structure

    In the early years of the program, students build a mathematical, scientific and engineering design foundation, followed by professional engineering courses, specialisations, communications and management courses and project work in the later years.

    The program also includes studies in environmental economics and law, and structural, geotechnical and water engineering.

    Students are required to complete 12 weeks of approved practical experience.

    Unless exempted by the Faculty, all international students are required to take Engineering Communication. At the commencement of study, the Faculty will advise which course is to be replaced by ENG 3003 Engineering Communication EAL.

    #Students who have not passed SACE Stage 2 Specialist Maths are required to enrol in MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM as a prerequisite to enrolling in MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA. The satisfactory completion of MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM is in addition to the normal requirements of this program. Students may manage their enrolment by enrolling in MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM in semester I, followed by MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA in semester 2, and MATHS 1012 Mathematics IB in Summer.

    EXTRA COURSE REQUIREMENT Students who have not taken SACE Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics (or equivalent) will be required to enrol in MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM in semester 1, followed by MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA in semester 2 with MATHS 1012 Mathematics IB in Summer School to complete the Mathematics requirements at Level 1. The satisfactory completion of Mathematics IM is in addition to the requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours).

    ** C&ENVENG 4106 Introduction to Geostatistics is a pre-requisite to C&ENVENG 4056 Linear Geostatistics.
    *** C&ENVENG 4115 Advanced Topics in Flood Hydrology not offered in 2017

    The 9 unit Research project must be undertaken in three consecutive semesters. Students form their groups and formulate their Research Proposal in C&ENVENG 3222. The group then develop the Research Project in C&ENVENG 4222A Part A and C&ENVENG 4222B Part B.
